    Abstract
Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems(MEMS)are devices and systems of the dimensional order of microns. The very basic idea of MEMS development-small size/volume, less mass/material, low power consumption, low cost, high integration, multifunctionality, etc, has made them suitable for space applications. The payload of a space craft is directly related to miniaturization without loss of functionality and hence MEMS based systems can make significant contribution in space applications. Especially RF-MEMS technology can contribute a lot in satellite communication. In this survey paper a detailed survey of -possible MEMS based systems and substems- which can be used in space, is done. The very idea is to give information to space scientists regarding the developments in MEMS technology and in turn get novel ideas and possible solutions for space challanges from micro-technology to build altogether new generation satellites which are smaller, lighter and much better functionality.
