    Abstract

For protecting C/C composite against high temperature oxidation, multi-layer coating system was designed as four functional layers, i.e. stress release (SR) layer, carbon shield (CS) layer, oxygen barrier (OB) layer and erosion barrier (EB) layer. Principles for selection of coating components in different functional layers were advanced by discussing the compatibility between different functional layers and between coating and C/C substrate. According to these principles a multi-layer coating system (SiC SR+CS layer / HfO 2 EB layer / SiO 2 OB layer) was fabricated on C/C composite and its high temperature anti-oxidation performance was examined in two oxidizing atmospheres with different pressures and heat fluxes. It has been found that the multi-layer coating system can effectively protect C/C composite against oxidation in both high temperature oxidizing atmospheres. During the tests, surface temperature of the coated C/C composite rose to a maximum of 2000 oC. The excellent anti-oxidation performance of coated C/C composite attributed to the combined function of components in multi-layer coating at high temperatures.
