- Abstract
The ESA Future Launcher Preparatory Programme FLPP includes, as one of the lead lines of development for the coming years, the re-entry technology demonstrator system IXV (Intermediate Experimental Vehicle). The IXV configuration has been optimized based on cost, mission scenario and especially foreseeable Technology In-Flight Experimentation (IFE) return. The IFE package actually represents for such a demonstrator vehicle the “payload” performing the mission, in view of which the vehicle is indeed funded and developed. The IXV IFE complement is organized in four sets: - the Core Experiments, which form integral parts of the IXV system vital layer, such as the Thermal Protection System (TPS) - the Passenger Experiments, i.e. “piggy-back” flown equipment exploiting free on-board resource budgets - the Vehicle Model Identification, that captures the essential dynamic behavior of the system through a set of measurements and their correlation with several interdependent simulations - the part of the In-Flight Measurement System directly supporting the above The paper describes the approach to defining each of the four sets and the Plan for controlling the IXV IFE as a whole, from development to operations and to elaboration of the information outcome. The paper also informs about the stage of development meanwhile reached.
