    Abstract

The Lunar Explorers Society is an international, non-profit organization that aims to promote the exploration of the Moon for the benefit of humanity. Its members include experienced space professionals, students, recent graduates, and members of the public interested in shaping the future of lunar exploration and development. The society strongly believes that the Moon should be the next step in the human exploration of the solar system and is dedicated to the advancement of research and development enabling a sustained human return to the Moon.

The Lunar Explorers Society was established in 2000, by a large group of enthusiasts participating on the 4th International Conference on the Exploration and Utilisation of the Moon (ICEUM4) at ESTEC, the Netherlands. This group was very active initially, but the activity declined after a few years. Since its revival at IAC Valencia in 2006, the Lunar Explorers Society has been focussed on the following objectives:

    • To promote international cooperation between scientists working on lunar missions by providing a neutral platform for their discussions.
    • To raise awareness of what could be achieved by returning to the Moon through educational, conference, and outreach activities.

A website, www.lunarexplorers.net, has been constructed to facilitate these objectives.

Selected focused research groups include Human Exploration, Robotic Exploration, Lunar Architecture, and Lunar Science. These groups integrate the work done in areas such as habitat architecture, dust mitigation strategies, lunar geology, the European Student Moon Orbiter program, and human psychology and physiology.

This paper focuses on the accomplishments of the Lunar Explorers Society over the past year. These accomplishments include is formal revival at the ISU Symposium “Why the Moon?” in February 2006, recruitment strategies, its involvement with Space Generation’s Moon Mars Workshop, and its progress in planning an independent session at the International Lunar Conference, to take place in October 2007. Its scholarship campaign to support student involvement at the ILC will also be discussed, in conjunction with recruitment of financial and intellectual support.
