    Abstract

This presentation is based on the materials collected during a national competition devoted to young students about the topic: “Sputnik; 50 years of space age”. Taken those materials as empirical evidence, the study analyzes the main features of space age, according to Spanish youngsters. The terms of this national –wide contest, called for ages between 12 and 17, were formulated not only related to Sputnik launching, but also regarding present space activities. Thus, it brings us a good opportunity to understand the common vision of a whole generation on space, in a specific country having an intermediate development in the matter. Topics like general opinions about benefits for daily life, progress of knowledge, future expectations, etc, will contribute to get a picture of the “state of opinion” prevailing in this segment of “pre-citizen” population. The contest has closed 1st March, resulting in about 150 selected teams.

Methodology for assessing contents and major features follows the criteria of both qualitative analysis and text analysis, similar to those of semiotics and social surveys of opinion.
