    Abstract
India made significant progress in the implementation of advanced technologies for its space missions. Apart from this, orientation of Indian space Programme towards societal applications is unique and noteworthy. This paper presents progress achieved by Kerala State of India in the application of Space technology for societal benefits.

Kerala made a leap forward in utilising the Educational Satellite, EDUSAT for imparting training to the teachers through the Satellite interactive terminals (SITS) established at many centres and education to rural areas through taking up installation of Receive only terminals in various schools. The ViCTERS (Virtual Class Technology on Edusat for Rural Schools) programme made a commendable achievement in imparting IT education to large number of high school students as well as in conducting teachers training programmes through EDUSAT.

Kerala made remarkable progress in telemedicine activity too. Teleconsultation is being provided to the peripheral centres from Regional Cancer Centre at Thiruvananthapuram for sophisticated treatment of patients at remote places. Satellite connectivity was provided to Sree chitra Thirunal Institute and selected district hospitals for the Tele Health and Medical Education Project of Kerala.

Kerala State Planning Board has launched a programme for the generation of extensive database on natural resources and environment for effective rural planning utilising RESOURCESAT data. Potential Fishing zone maps have been generated using OCEANSAT for the benefit of fishermen community. The disaster management support programme of ISRO addresses creation of digital database for monitoring of major natural disasters using satellite and aerial imageries. Kerala has also taken up ground water studies, soil mapping, land use and land cover studies, weather forecast services using satellite data. Village resource centres have also been established to provide integrated information to various sections of people on land, water, fisheries, crop management etc. In a short period of time Kerala may stand as a role model to other Indian States for the utilisation of Space Technology to the socio economic development of the State.
