    Abstract

Background: For decades the benefits of space activities, especially their social-economic impact, have been discussed frequently. In this context the transfer of space-borne technologies and services into the terrestrial economy as well as innovation and job creation have become trendy topics for the space sector and in politics. Numerous activities and dedicated technology transfer programs have evolved and manifold transfers and new business creation have taken place worldwide.

Europe: For many years the European Space Agency (ESA) maintains a “Technology Transfer Programme (TTP)” and also on national level similar activities exist, be it under the auspices of space agencies or other actors. More recently also the European Commission (EC) became involved through the “EuropeInnova” Initiative (by EC DG Industry and Enterprise). Three projects are currently underway supported by the EC, which address finance issues associated with space commercialization for non-space markets, namely: “INVESaT” (finance network: satellite application downstream ICT), “FinanceSpace” (finance network: space technologies) and “Castle” (cluster network). Besides these government-led programs, also private and independent activities take place.

Focus: The paper elaborates on general issues associated with supporting businesses that build a significant portion of their growth and competitive advantage on the utilization of European space resources, i.e. space technologies and satellite applications for non-space markets. An overview of major relevant activities is given and a categorization of sectors, business specifics and needs as well as potential roles of the stakeholders involved is proposed. In particular also the status of the projects INVESat and FinanceSpace and an overall outlook are discussed.
