    Abstract
China’s space industry has made great progress since 2000. The progress culminated in 2003 when China successfully launched and retrieved the first manned spacecraft. A new development plan has been drawn up for the next five years or more. Among the major policies and measures for China’s space industry at present and in the near future is to strengthen legislation work. Being members to the four space treaties and UNCOPUOS, China will speed up space legislation to guide and regulate space activities, increase the level of administration by law, and create a legislative environment favorable for the development of space activities. This paper examines present legal regime for space activities and suggests means for further development of space law in China. The paper will also examine China’s role in international/regional space activities and space cooperation, in compliance with its obligation under the present space legal regime.
