- Abstract
The increase of space debris has motivated several space agencies to consider the salvage of non-functional space objects. In recent years, several proposals have appeared for the capture of space debris. As launching States or States of registry have jurisdiction on space objects (or parts thereof), the salvage of non-functional space objects without prior consent presents a problem. This article will address the legal link between a State and its space objects and will examine how far its responsibility extends when such objects become non-functional. Analogies of maritime salvage will be addressed.
