    Abstract
When a series of workshops on the Cultural Aspects of SETI (CASETI) was sponsored by NASA and the SETI Institute in 1991-1992, participants from a wide range of disciplines identified priorities for further research in four areas: history and SETI; human responses to detection of extraterrestrial intelligence; SETI and policy; and SETI, education, news, and entertainment. This paper reviews progress in these areas over the past 16 years, as well as in other topics relevant to the societal impact of SETI that were not emphasized in the CASETI report but that have flourished nonetheless.
