    Abstract
This paper will present the on-going scientific research activities managed by ESA that will enable future human spaceflight beyond LEO. Areas of interest include radiation, crew physical and mental health, advanced materials, fluid and heat processing for exploration architecture elements. The research activities will encompass ground-based studies, the use if analogue environment, flight experiments as well as the use of the ISS and ESA's Columbus laboratory as a test-bed for future human space exploration.
