Generation-X (Gen-X) is a large area, high angular resolution X-ray telescope to follow Chandra, XMM-Newton, XEUS and Constellation-X. We discuss the scientific goals of the mission, the mission architecture and technology challenges, and show how a heavy-lift capability such as Ares V streamlines the Gen-X architecture and reduces mission costs. We emphasize the mission design trades driven by shroud dimensions and lift capability.
