    Abstract
Over the last five years Umeå University has run summer courses of duration three weeks in the north of Sweden, with assistance from local research organizations, the space centre Esrange and the European Space Agency. The aims of these courses have been to give students studying on traditional science and engineering degree programmes, at universities in Sweden and abroad, insight into the fields of space science and technology and human spaceflight and exploration. These courses have been given in English and have been open to students of all countries as long as they satisfied the formal entrance requirements. In Sweden tuition is currently free of charge at universities so there has been no fee for attendance. The courses have attracted students from many countries both within and outside of Europe and with a range of backgrounds. The popularity of the courses has increased each year. Following their success and in response to demand a winter course was developed. It takes the form of a distance course with a four-day meeting in Kiruna consisting of lectures, exercises, visits and discussions. The courses give the students a unique opportunity to meet lecturers who are experts in their fields and to obtain inspiration regarding degree projects, further studies and career opportunities in the space field. In addition the students have the possibility to meet others with similar interests and to expand their individual contact net. The market for such courses is probably larger than is currently catered for.
