- Abstract
The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems, or PISCES, is the only center in the world dedicated to research and education in science and technology for sustained human presence on the Moon and beyond. When it is fully developed, PISCES will feature a simulated lunar outpost located on the lunar-like volcanic terrain of the Big Island of Hawai`i, where research will focus on the production of energy, food, materials and oxygen for future inhabitants of such a settlement, along with its design, operation and governance. Because it is being built on partnerships between industry, academia and government, PISCES will function as an incubator of new ideas to enable space exploration and settlement. PISCES will draw particular inspiration from its international focus; encouraging participation from national and supra-national space agencies around the world. It will emphasize entrepreneurship among participants to ensure strong involvement by the private sector in the coming expansion of the world’s economy into outer space. Situated at the center of the Pacific Rim, around which exist many of the world’s space-faring nations, PISCES will offer large and small companies alike the opportunity to work with international experts on problems related to living on another planet. The center will provide an environment where new ideas can germinate and grow amid cross-fertilization from university faculty and students and from government scientists and engineers. In addition to its technical areas of concentration, PISCES will stress issues associated with operating a business on the Moon. Details of the planned PISCES programs will be presented at the conference.
