    Abstract
    This terminological work is part of our Doctoral research project, entitled “Trilingual Vocabulary of Astronomy: neology and variation study”, which was initiated in August 2006, and has the following main aims: 1. Preparation of a trilingual terminographic work, Portuguese – English – French, in the domain of Astronomy; 2. Characterization of neology of the terms of the field; 3. Study of terminological variation observed in the set of the studied vocabulary. Portuguese will be the source language; English and French will be target languages. We structured, for preliminary information purposes about the terminology of the domain, a conceptual map with approximately 300 terms in Portuguese, initially composed by four key fields: 1.Astronomy; 2.Solar System; 3.Star; 4.Galaxy. In the course of the research, this frame was restructured, based on the main international Astronomy indexation topics, such as the Astronomical Index from the international reviews Astrophysical Journal, Astronomy & Astrophysics and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. With this procedure, our conceptual map consisted of about 700 terms distributed in eight main fields, namely: 1.Astronomy; 2.Sun; 3.Solar System; 4.Star; 5.Interstellar Medium; 6.Milky Way Galaxy; 7.Galaxies; 8.Cosmology. For English and French equivalents search, which is the current stage of our research, we adopted the methodology proposed by the Conférence des Services de Traduction des États de l’Europe Occidentale (CST): 1. accurate identification of the concepts in source language, and the systematic research is an excellent method for this purpose; 2. identification of the designation in target language, based on an original documentation (CST, 1990, p. 13). We created a database in English and French from the corpus originally written in these languages, by following Computational Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics methodological strategies. The use of a corpus composed by Astronomy treaties originally written in English and French meets the purpose of identifying the terms effectively used by the experts of the target language.
