  • Space Debris - The Threat to Commercial Use of Space

    Paper number

    IAC-08.E8.3.8

    Author

Dr. Paul Dempsey, McGill University, Canada

    Year

    2008

    Abstract
Space debris poses enormous problems to the commercial use of space. The Chinese ASAT test of January 2007 and the US destruction of satellite in February 2008 reveal that States feel free to use military weapons against satellites despite the low orbit debris it creates.
This essay will examine the threat space debris poses, alternative mitigation strategies, and the potential need for international regulatory prohibitions on further debris creation.
