- Abstract
Current Earth Observation missions are using ground stations in combination with terrestrial communication networks to transmit Megabit-Information from space sensors to the data processing centres. New technologies and system architectures are developed to overcome the latency of data refresh and to speed up the data flow to Gigabit per second from Space to ground. This paper will explain the system architecture of a space based data relay network and the technologies inside. On actual running programs, the confidence in the innovative laser communication terminals will be shown. The presented system approach offers a hybrid payload concept, based on Laser communication and Ka-Band downlink systems, designed in an efficient layout. Additional advantages like rapid tasking with the use of bidirectional links for surveillance, metrological or other EO Missions will be discussed as well.
