Abstract

ESA’s Education and Knowledge Management Office has recently established the ESA Academy to enrich and complete the portfolio of opportunities offered to university students. The objective of the ESA Academy is to complement the standard academic formation in space-related disciplines with theoretical knowledge and practical experience; it is composed of two elements: the already existing suite of hands-on programmes complemented by new training activities. As such, the ESA Academy will offer a transfer of space expertise, know-how and standard professional practice from ESA to European university students; this will be done,  in close coordination with European academic institutions and, whenever possible, in partnership with European space industry and other organizations involved in space activities. The new training component will be hosted in a newly-built dedicated infrastructure at ESA/Redu in Belgium:  the Training and Learning Centre. ESA/Redu will also host another new educational facility, the European CubeSat Education Centre, an AIV facility dimensioned to the size of cubeSats education projects.

The Training and Learning Centre is a facility, where training courses on all areas of ESA expertise will be organized; it will be moreover equipped with a Concurrent Design Facility aimed at providing training experience on the design of space missions and systems. The target audience are university students, from Bachelor to PhD level, in science or engineering fields from all ESA Member and Cooperating States. 

In symbiosis with the Training and Learning Centre that will host cubeSats related workshops and training sessions, the European CubeSat Education Centre, will offer professional level end-to-end support capabilities - from mission design to in-orbit operations - to all those European university students interested in CubeSat development; particularly those participating to the Education Office ‘Fly Your Satellite' Programme.
