- Abstract
The Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SH-SSP) was held for the fifth time in Adelaide, Australia, in early 2016. Once again the program brought together an interesting mix of participants and experts from around the world. The inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary philosophy of the program was reflected in a diversity of lectures, hands on workshops, public events and field exercises, delivered by over 60 staff, faculty and visiting experts. A team project involving participants, faculty and consulting experts produced a White Paper entitled ‘Sensing Progress: Space Solutions for Food & Water Security’. The five week live-in program is now a permanent educational offering and the cooperative relationship between the International Space University and the University of South Australia continues to strengthen. An independent study commissioned by the Australian Government and published in November 2015 has confirmed the ongoing economic and social benefits of the government funding program that assisted the establishment of the SH-SSP. The next session will again be held in Adelaide, Australia in January 2017, as a precursor to the International Astronautical Congress to be held in Adelaide later that year.
