    Abstract
With the goal to provide more performing and affordable space systems, EADS Astrium proposes a new generation product to efficiently complement the Astrosat family. This product is designed in accordance with the long term vision of the 2010 decade.
The Astrosat 250 satellite targets satellites in the range of 300 to 600 kg, still capable of a multiple launch on small launchers, but with a significant increase of capabilities with respect to micro-satellites in terms of power, mass and volume available to the payloads.
This increase of accommodation capability goes with an increase of satellite autonomy, on board data processing power and downlink rate. The satellite is optimised for Low Earth Orbits and can accommodate any kind of payload, from Earth Observation (optics and radar), to science (e.g. atmospheric chemistry) or telecommunication.
The paper describes the new Astrosat 250 satellite, its options, its place within the Astrosat family (AS 100, AS 500 and AS 1000), and describes two typical Earth Observation missions based on this satellite.
